Eating right means eating lots of fruits, vegetables and other
healthy foods. Wanna know a secret? Sometimes Mike doesn’t
like eating this stuff, even if it will make him a great rider.
Because of this, his mom helped him make eating right lots of fun
by creating special snacks. Each month, we’ll share a new
recipe.
String cheese is a very nutritious snack—and it’s lots
of fun! Mike loves to pull stringy pieces and slurp them up like
floppy noodles. Another fun thing you can do with string cheese
is to make Cheese Goobers.
What you need:
1. 12 sticks of string cheese.
2. 1 big box of raisins
3. Two medium-sized oranges. Mom should cut these
into half-slices.
4. 1 box of toothpicks
5. 1 package of googly eyes (mom can find these
at any craft store)
What to do:
1. Take one stick of string cheese and bite off
the end. Don’t take too big a bite—just bite off enough
so you can start pulling strings.
2. Start gently pulling strings down about 1⁄2
inch. DO NOT separate them from the cheese stick. Do this all around
the top of the cheese stick until your cheese goober has a spiky
hairdo.
3. Take two googly eyes and place them about 1/8
inch below the hair line. Gently press them into the cheese so they’ll
stay put.
4. Do the same thing with one raisin to make a
nose.
5. Take one half-slice of the orange and one toothpick.
Place the orange slice to look like a big, “cheesy”
grin. Mom—use the toothpick to hold the slice in place (insert
as if pinning it to the cheese stick. The toothpick should not be
visible from the front.
6. You’re done! Show your silly Cheese Goober
to everyone at the table—then eat it up! (But not the googly
eyes, silly! Save those for fun later.)
VARIATIONS
Here are some other fun things to try with Cheese Goobers:
1. Use different foods for different parts of the
face.
2. Make the face smaller and use the toothpicks
and other foods to build arms, legs, hands and feet!
